The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of six family members in Gwarzo Local Government Area after consuming a local dish known as Danwake.
The victims, identified as a widow, Alhakatu Abdulkarim, and her five children—Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman, and Jamilu—died shortly after eating the meal, which is suspected to have been contaminated.
According to the police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna, the family was rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital, where medical professionals declared them dead.
The police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the tragedy. “We are awaiting the medical report from the hospital to confirm the cause of death,” Haruna stated.
The incident reportedly occurred last Thursday, with speculation that the widow may have used expired cassava flour in preparing the dish.
