Nigeria Champions Digital Transformation at IPv6 Summit

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with Huawei, the IPv6 Forum, and the IPv6 Council Nigeria, recently hosted a significant IPv6 Driven Digital Summit in Abuja.

The summit, titled “Bringing Net 5.5G Into Reality: Inspiring New Growth,” emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to adopt Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) to meet future internet demands and drive the nation’s digital transformation.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the importance of IPv6 in Nigeria’s digital evolution.

He highlighted that protecting society and fostering growth necessitates substantial investment in technologies like IPv6.

“We shouldn’t only see government policies and interventions as opportunities to regulate; there are economic implications to consider,” Dr. Tijani remarked.

He stressed the need to ensure that Nigeria benefits economically from IPv6 and cautioned against creating opportunities solely for foreign companies.

He also called for efforts to build a skilled workforce to support this development.

Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director General of NITDA, highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s emphasis on accelerating Nigeria’s industrialization and digitization.

Abdullahi noted that adopting IPv6 is central to this strategy, aiming to enhance growth and fully realize Nigeria’s digital economy potential.

The summit gathered industry leaders, policymakers, and technology experts to discuss IPv6 and collaborate on its adoption.

Experts anticipate that transitioning to IPv6 will be pivotal for Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global digital economy and a crucial step in combating cybercrimes.

The summit’s outcomes are expected to propel Nigeria towards a more connected and innovative future.
