Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental activist and known vaccine skeptic, has withdrawn from the 2024 U.S. presidential race and thrown his support behind former President Donald Trump.
This development marks the end of Kennedy’s independent campaign, which he launched after initially seeking the Democratic nomination.
Kennedy’s team recently submitted paperwork to remove his name from the Pennsylvania ballot, according to the Associated Press.
Although the filing did not explicitly state that Kennedy was suspending his campaign, he is expected to make a formal announcement in Phoenix, coinciding with a Trump campaign event where Kennedy is expected to appear as a “special guest.”
Kennedy, who hails from the iconic Kennedy political family, has made a significant pivot with this endorsement.
His independent bid had been struggling with declining poll numbers and waning financial support in recent months.
This move follows a series of positive interactions between Kennedy and Trump, including a meeting after an assassination attempt against the former president.
Trump, speaking on “Fox & Friends,” expressed his appreciation for Kennedy’s support, stating, “If he endorsed me, I would be honoured by it. I would be very honoured by it. He really has his heart in the right place.”
Kennedy’s endorsement is expected to further shake up the dynamics of the 2024 presidential race as the campaign season intensifies.
