Heartland FC Coach Christian Obi has tragically passed away following a road accident.
The team announced on Saturday that Obi died on Friday, August 23, 2024, en route to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament.
According to the statement, “Heartland FC deeply mourns the loss of Christian Power Obi, who tragically died from a road accident.
The team was traveling from Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, for the tournament when one of their vehicles collided with a truck that was parked carelessly.
The impact injured Coach Obi, who was unconscious and had a slight injury to his right leg.
Despite immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo LGA of Imo State, Coach Obi succumbed to his injuries.”
The statement continued, “The club is devastated by this loss.
Coach Obi was instrumental in our unbeaten run in the Nigeria National League for the 2022-23 season, culminating in our victory at the NNL Super 8 in Asaba.”
The club has requested privacy for the grieving family and will not be making further statements at this time.
Coach Obi’s remains have been taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) morgue in Owerri, and the injured players have been referred to the same hospital for continued care..
