France Probes Synagogue Explosion as Possible Terrorism

An explosion outside the Beth Yaacov synagogue in La Grande-Motte, southern France, is being investigated as “attempted terrorist murder.”

Authorities revealed that two cars were set ablaze, with one containing a hidden gas canister. Surveillance footage shows a man, carrying a Palestinian flag and possibly a handgun, igniting the vehicles.

Jewish community leader Yonathan Arfi described the incident as “an attempt to kill Jews,” noting it appeared aimed at Saturday morning worshippers.

One police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the explosion, which occurred between 08:00 and 08:30 local time. Five people, including the rabbi, were inside the synagogue at the time.

La Grande-Motte Mayor Stéphane Rossignol confirmed that surveillance cameras captured the arsonist in action.

President Emmanuel Macron pledged a thorough investigation, while Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed full support for the Jewish community and promised increased security around Jewish sites.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal labeled the act as “antisemitic” and stated that security forces are actively pursuing the suspect.

This attack highlights ongoing concerns about antisemitism in Europe, as recent EU surveys report high levels of discrimination against Jewish individuals.

The incident has drawn condemnation from across France’s political spectrum, with calls for justice from various leaders.
