Egbetokun: We Are Committed to Eliminating Criminal Elements in Nigeria

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to eliminating criminal threats to national security.

This statement followed the rescue of medical students from the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri, who had been abducted in Benue State.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Egbetokun emphasized, “We remain resolute in our commitment to rid our nation of criminal elements who seek to disrupt the peace and security of society.”

He added, “The Nigerian Police Force will continue to employ every lawful means at its disposal to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians.”

The IGP assured that the force would remain vigilant and proactive, striving for a safer Nigeria where security is a top priority.

He pledged that the police would not rest until every citizen could live free from fear and intimidation.

The Vice Chancellors of the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri, along with the parents of the victims and the Benue State government, expressed gratitude for the successful rescue operation.

After seven days in captivity, the 20 medical students and seven other victims were handed over to their respective Vice Chancellors. They had been abducted on August 15, 2024, while traveling to a conference in Enugu.

The rescue operation, coordinated by the National Security Adviser, involved the police, DSS, military personnel, and support from the Benue State government.

The students were intercepted by bandits while passing through Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State.
