Kano Assesses Progress on Basic Education Reforms

The Kano State Education Sector Joint Steering Committee held a two-day meeting in Kaduna on Monday to evaluate progress on basic education initiatives in Kano State.

The session brought together stakeholders to review the implementation of education reforms and address ongoing challenges.

Kano State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, highlighted that the meeting followed a state of emergency declaration on education by Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf.

Doguwa emphasized that the purpose of the meeting was to assess the progress of the 14-point education reform agenda and discuss recommendations from the Kano Education Recovery Conference and Action Plan.

Doguwa stated, “We are also expected to present findings from the 2023 Annual Education Sector Performance Review, provide an update on the Haske Basic Education for Integrated Qur’anic Schools pilot, and outline the next steps.”

According to a press statement from Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment, Ministry of Education, Kano State, the Ministry plans to conduct a large-scale school enrollment drive, distribute instructional materials across all 44 local government areas, and reopen previously closed boarding schools.

Additionally, the administration will soon provide furniture and uniforms to schools and offer upkeep allowances to ensure smooth operations.

State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Mata, underscored the commitment to upgrading technical education in state tertiary institutions.

He remarked, “We have developed an action plan to enhance technical education and create a conducive environment for skills acquisition.”

The meeting also reviewed the education crisis response plan, focusing on areas such as access to quality education, the almajiri system, girl-child education, teacher development, and curriculum development.

Attendees included representatives from the Kano State House of Assembly, the Kano Emirate Council, development partners, MDAs, and civil society organizations.
