Lagos Mass Transit Red Line Rail Begins Partial Operations Today

The Lagos Mass Transit Red Line Rail is launching partial operations today, marking a key development in the state’s efforts to upgrade its transportation system.

Kolawole Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), announced the news in a statement released on Tuesday.

As part of the initial phase, the Red Line Rail will offer free passenger services and run four daily trips between Oyingbo and Agbado. This new link is expected to improve connectivity between Lagos and Ogun State, benefiting many workers and business owners who commute from Ogun to Lagos.

Ojelabi noted that the launch follows extensive planning, including staff training, security feature installations, and a successful six-week trial run conducted without passengers to ensure safety and efficiency.

Starting Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line will begin interacting with non-fee-paying passengers in organized groups to gather feedback before officially starting commercial operations.

“The partial operations, akin to the test phase of the Blue Line, mark a significant advancement towards achieving the Lagos State Government’s goal of a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation network,” Ojelabi said.

The initial phase of the Red Line covers 27 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo, offering a dependable and cost-effective travel option designed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the daily commute for Lagos residents.
