Lagos Lawmaker Promises Reopening of Borders

The lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Sesi Whingah, has assured his constituents that Nigeria’s borders will soon reopen for commercial activities under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

This was conveyed during a Badagry Stakeholders and Youth Engagement event organized by Whingah’s office.

The theme of the engagement was centered around “Charting A Prosperous Future for Badagry,” with discussions focusing on unlocking the town’s potential, empowering its people, and accelerating progress.

Whingah emphasized the government’s efforts to boost internal revenue, hinting at the reopening of borders to alleviate the economic challenges faced by his constituents.

Addressing local issues, Whingah promised that the electrification of certain Badagry communities would soon be addressed by the Rural Electrification Agency.

He also highlighted the negative impact of multiple checkpoints along the Lagos-Badagry expressway, noting that these barriers hinder development by discouraging tourists and investors.

He suggested that security agencies should consider using technology, such as drones, to monitor the area more efficiently.

Whingah also highlighted some of his achievements in office, including securing employment for 30 youths in federal agencies and working on creating 40 pensionable jobs for more deserving youths in Badagry.

He mentioned the success of the NIN registration center in Badagry, which has registered over 70,000 individuals, ensuring their inclusion in the national database.

Regarding infrastructure, Whingah noted that discussions with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have led to a commitment to start work on the Mowo-Ikoga road soon.

Additionally, he mentioned that the Federal Government is considering re-awarding the uncompleted Gbaji-Owode-Apa expressway project, with plans to construct it as a concrete road in the 2025 budget.

A panel of professionals at the event also deliberated on the future of Badagry. There was a collective call for addressing environmental issues and infrastructural deficits, with emphasis on electricity.

The event also featured discussions on the need for collaboration among political leaders to unlock Badagry’s potential, as well as calls for greater inclusion of women in leadership roles within the community.

The event concluded with Whingah awarding cash prizes, laptops, and other gifts to select individuals in recognition of their contributions to Badagry.

He also announced an upcoming ICT program for 1,000 youths, titled “Badagry Tech Talents 1,000 Programme,” aimed at training, empowering, and connecting young people with opportunities in the tech industry.
