The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a stern warning to individuals unlawfully accessing restricted areas of the nation’s airports, particularly at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The Director of Aviation Security Services, Afegbai Igbafe, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, revealing that the airport experiences an alarming number of intrusions—up to 20 each night.
In response to these security breaches, FAAN is taking significant steps to strengthen airport security measures.
The authority is working on implementing enhanced access control systems to address vulnerabilities identified by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
These efforts include upgrading existing amenities, such as CCTV cameras, and addressing the issue of perimeter fencing, which has been compromised by neighboring communities.
To further fortify airport security, FAAN has initiated joint patrols involving aviation security personnel, the military, and the Air Force.
Additionally, FAAN is collaborating with state authorities to establish mobile courts to expedite legal action against intruders, aiming for swift and effective justice.
The newly launched armed unit of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) is also part of the comprehensive strategy to secure the perimeter and ensure the safety of airport operations across the country.
