Trailer Crushes Fully Loaded 16-Seater Bus Heading to Calabar, No Survivors
Seventeen people lost their lives in a devastating road accident on Friday afternoon along the Calabar-Itu federal highway.
The crash occurred when a 40-foot containerized trailer veered off its lane and collided with a commercial 16-seater bus travelling from Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, to Calabar.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the incident as horrific. One of them, identified simply as Emmanuel, said the trailer landed squarely on the bus, instantly killing all 17 occupants — 16 passengers and the driver. “There were no survivors. The trailer completely smashed the bus. It was a horrific scene,” he said.
The eyewitness attributed the tragedy to the poor condition of the Calabar-Itu highway, which has remained under protracted repairs for over 15 years without visible improvement.
As of the time of this report, the bodies of the victims had been recovered and taken to an undisclosed mortuary by local youths and concerned residents.
Attempts to get a response from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and police officials in Calabar proved unsuccessful, as both agencies declined to comment on the incident.
