Tinubu Mourns Death of Muhammadu Buhari, Orders Flags At Half-staff

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally announced the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier today in London following a prolonged illness. He was 82.

According to a State House statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical care.

In response to the sad development, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the UK to accompany the late leader’s body back to Nigeria for burial.

President Tinubu also personally reached out to Buhari’s widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, offering his deepest condolences and expressing the nation’s collective grief at the passing of one of its most influential leaders.

As a mark of respect, President Tinubu has ordered that all national flags be flown at half-staff across the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari was a two-time elected leader, having served as Nigeria’s civilian President from 2015 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Prior to his democratic leadership, he ruled as the country’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985 following a coup.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country and around the world in honor of the late statesman, whose legacy of anti-corruption and infrastructural development defined his years in public service.

Further announcements regarding funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
