Nigeria has bid a solemn farewell to one of its most iconic statesmen, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. He passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon at a private clinic in London at the age of 82.
Buhari, a two-time Nigerian leader—first as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023—was buried in accordance with Islamic rites after a state funeral that drew dignitaries from across the country and around the world.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led the nation in paying final respects, describing the late leader as “a nationalist whose unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, security, and anti-corruption war has left an enduring legacy on our national conscience.”
Among those who attended the state funeral were Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice Presidents Yemi Osinbajo and Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, and prominent political figures including Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, Kayode Fayemi, Yahaya Bello, Ali Modu Sheriff, Ibikunle Amosun, and others. Military honors, interfaith prayers, and heartfelt tributes underscored the event, reflecting the wide-reaching impact of Buhari’s leadership.
His remains were flown from London to Katsina aboard a Nigerian Air Force jet and received in Daura by a mourning crowd made up of traditional rulers, associates, and ordinary citizens. The Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, presided over the funeral prayer at Buhari’s residence, praising his decades-long service to the emirate, Katsina State, and Nigeria at large.
As prayers ended and the earth embraced the casket, Daura fell into a reflective silence. For many, Buhari represented more than just a political figure—he was a symbol of northern pride, military discipline, and national conviction.
Born on December 17, 1942, Muhammadu Buhari rose through the ranks of the Nigerian military, gaining national attention for his disciplined leadership and fierce stance against corruption. His presidential years were defined by ambitious reforms in agriculture, infrastructure development, and a relentless battle against insurgency—though not without controversies and challenges that stirred national debate.
