Nigeria clinches Second Position at Third African Championships in Ogun
Nigeria has clinched the second position on the medals table at the just concluded Third African Athletic Championships (CAA U18 and U20) held in Abeokuta, Ogun State with
5 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze.
In a statement by the NSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr (Mrs) Kehinde Ajayi, the tournament exhibited a remarkable display of talent, showcasing the best of African athletics and strengthening the African bond.
The young Nigerian athletes, both boys and girls, showed that they are on an upward trajectory, consistently securing great victories that represent the nation’s future hope, aspiration, and success in larger competitions.
The Conference of African Athletics leadership praised Nigeria for its impressive preparedness in hosting the championship on just two months’ notice.
The National Sports Commission’s Management, led by National Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, heartily commended Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun and the state government for their support during the two competitions, the warm hospitality of the people, and the excellent sporting facilities provided for the young athletes.
Mallam Dikko, who described the competition as amazing, noted that, “we have achieved our target of winning medals and identifying talented young athletes to nurture for future competitions like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games”
He appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s continuous support for the NSC and pledged the Commission’s renewed commitment to the development of domestic sports, uncovering talents in schools, and supporting local leagues as well as organizations
The Chairman added that the impressive performances of the nation’s young athletes indicate a promising future, highlighting that “their future is assured.”
In his closing remarks, NSC’s Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade said, “Another history has been made here today.” Commending the exemplary sportsmanship and convivial atmosphere, Olopade praised Nigerian athletes for making a distinctive mark and bringing pride to the nation.
“The competition has rekindled our hope for the future, and we’ve discovered notable talents that we’ll nurture and develop. This underscores our commitment to investing in grassroots sports to unlock the best in our athletes,” he emphasized.
Elated by the energetic performances of the home athletes, Olopade highlighted the Commission’s dynamic and sustainable reforms designed to elevate the development of athletics in the country.
He thanked the coaches for their unrelenting efforts, the African Federation of Athletes (AFN), and the athletes for their excellent performance.
Mr. Adegboyega Anthony, Senior Special Assistant on Grassroot Sports to the President, noted, “the President’s passion for sports is manifestly paying off, and there’s definitely hope for Nigeria’s future in athletics.”
According to His Excellency Philip Shuaibu, the new helmsman of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), “Nigeria is thrilled and proud of her athletes. The NIS will support the National Sports Commission’s renewed vision to develop young athletes and represent the country with excellence at continental and international competitions.”
The track event was a thrilling success, showcasing Nigerians’ resilience and determination as they competed with strength and gusto.
