The Bauchi State Police Command has commenced investigations into the sudden death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Dambam Local Government Area of the state.

The deceased, identified as Nwokedi Chukwuebuka, 28, was discovered unconscious in the early hours of Sunday in an apartment provided for corps members in the community. His colleagues and the Corps Liaison Officer (CLO) had arranged the accommodation.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Waziri, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview on Monday, stating that the Commissioner of Police, Sani Aliu, had ordered a preliminary probe.

According to Waziri, the Dambam CLO reported the matter to the police at about 9:20 a.m. on August 10. He said the corps members, who were preparing for Sunday church service, noticed Chukwuebuka—serving with state code number BA/25A/2069—had not woken up.

“The CLO went to wake him but found he was not breathing. The matter was reported to the police, and the Divisional Police Officer visited the scene,” Waziri said.

The corps member was taken to hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead. His body was later deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, for preservation.

Waziri added that the police have commenced a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

A similar incident occurred in 2023 in Adamawa State, where another corps member, Samuel, reportedly slumped and died while watching a football match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
