    Insecurity leaves two UniJos students dead, two others, staff member injured

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya revealed yesterday that the institution lost two students.

    Two others and a staff member sustained injuries in recent security incidents in Jos , the Plateau State capital.

    Ishaya explained that one of the deceased students, Abel Joro Gershon, a 300-level Building student, was shot in the stomach and passed away while receiving treatment at the University Teaching Hospital Intensive Care Unit on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

    Another student, a 500- level Quantity Survey student, Adeyemo Oluwafemi Temitope, was shot and killed by hoodlums on Bauchi Road in Jos on April 1, 2026.

    He further disclosed that Ishaya Patrick, a 300-level Geography and Planning student sustained a leg injury on the same day and is currently recovering in the hospital.

    Additionally, Duguryi Ufialas Daniel, a staff member of the Directorate of Student Affairs, was shot in the thigh, and is receiving medical attention.

    Longji Molshap Wumnokol, a 300-level Geology student, was also shot but survived and is in critical condition in the hospital.

    “In total, five members of the University of Jos, including five students and a staff member, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of two students died,” he explained.

    The VC stated that the university management immediately engaged relevant security agencies to protect the campus community during the incident, receiving support from both the state and national security forces.

    Ishaya stressed that the Commissioner of Police, Director of the Department of State Service (DSS), Command JTF and other security agencies were on campus to ensure adequate security and provide assurance to staff and students.

    He said: “The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division, Jos, Major-General Folusho Oyinlola visited the campus on April 7 to assess the situation. The university has no plans to relocate and maintains a positive relationship with the local community.”(Guardian)
