General Ibrahim Babangida has dismissed recent claims suggesting that he supports a military takeover in Nigeria.
This response comes after an X account, falsely purporting to represent Babangida, circulated misinformation about his stance on military rule.
According to Babangida’s media aide, Mahmoud Abdullahi, the account in question, which uses Babangida’s image and the Nigerian coat of arms, is not affiliated with the former leader.
Abdullahi noted that this account had previously spread false information, including a fabricated endorsement of a presidential candidate during last year’s election.
Babangida has consistently expressed his commitment to Nigeria’s democratic process, asserting that the nation’s future lies in strengthening, not weakening, democracy.
He is proud of the Nigerian military’s support for civilian governments since 1999 and views military intervention in politics as a relic of the past.
The former President has urged the public and media to critically assess information from unofficial sources and to verify any claims supposedly made by him on social media platforms.
