FG Clears Air On Distribution of ₦573 Billion to State Governors

The Federal Government has addressed some claims regarding the distribution of funds to state governments.

Contrary to reports saying that ₦570 billion was allocated to each state under the World Bank-supported NG-Cares program, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, clarified that the total amount distributed was ₦573 billion.

Idris explained that this sum was shared among the 36 state governors and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministry between the end of 2023 and July 2024.

He said that the amount was not allocated per state but was distributed collectively as reimbursements under the NG-Cares program.

The Minister’s statement follows misleading reports from some media outlets claiming that each state received ₦570 billion individually.

Idris clarified that the total distribution included ₦135.4 billion in late 2023 and ₦438.36 billion in the previous month.

He urged media organizations to report these figures accurately and avoid being sensational.

    Idris said:

“At no time did I say that State Governors received ₦570 Billion each from the Federal Government.

“What the States and the FCT collectively received in reimbursements between the end of 2023 and July 2024, under the World Bank-supported NG-CARES program, is a total of ₦573 Billion Naira, as follows.

“₦135.4B in late 2023, and ₦438.36B last month. These numbers are in the public domain, in the spirit of transparency, and should not be the subject of distortion or sensationalism in the media.”
