Witnesses reported that a group of thugs positioned themselves near the Federal Secretariat, intimidating and chasing away protesters.
Prior to Agbalam’s arrival, two protesters were beaten, and police officers present at the scene did not intervene.
Agbalam was surrounded and threatened by the thugs, who declared their intention to prevent any protest activities that day.
The Federal Secretariat has been a focal point for the protests, which have been ongoing for the past week.
The inaction of the over 20 police officers present raises concerns about the protection of protesters’ rights and overall security in Rivers State.
Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has promised a thorough investigation into the incident, vowing to hold accountable those responsible and prevent future occurrences.
Disu, known for his efforts to maintain professionalism and order during the protests, had previously visited protest sites and even offered refreshments to peaceful demonstrators.
This incident comes on Day 7 of the nationwide protest, which has seen increasing violence in some Northern states.
