In a tragic incident in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, a canoe carrying passengers across the Gamoda River at Nahuce village capsized on August 8, 2024.
The mishap resulted in the death of five individuals, while fifteen others remain unaccounted for.
The incident occurred when a canoe, transporting 20 passengers, overturned in the river.
Local authorities, including the police and volunteer divers, promptly responded to the emergency, managing to rescue five people from the waters.
Sadly, five others were confirmed dead, including individuals aged between 15 and 75 years.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities are striving to locate the remaining missing passengers.
The Commissioner of Police for Jigawa State, CP AT Abdullahi, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the souls of the deceased.
