Anambra sets September 28 for LG election

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled the local government elections for Saturday, September 28, 2024.

This was revealed in a circular that was signed on Monday in Awka by Genevieve Osakwe, the chairman of ANSIEC.

The state last held local government elections in 2014. Therefore, these upcoming elections will be the first in ten years.

Since then, caretaker committee chairmen have been in charge of all 21 local government areas. They are chosen every three months by succeeding governors.

Genevieve Osakwe was named the commission’s chairman when the state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, officially opened the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission on Tuesday.

The governor claims that the commission’s mandate encompasses planning, carrying out, and overseeing all elections and matters associated with elective office elections in the state’s local government councils, in addition to giving the appropriate counsel to the Independent National Electoral Commission regarding the compiling of the voter register.

The election schedule, schedule of events, and other information are available from the Commission’s headquarters in Awka starting on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, according to the circular signed by the ANSIEC chairman.

The circular stated, “The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered political parties and the general public that local government elections in the state will be held on Saturday, 28th September 2024.

“The election timetable, schedule of activities, and other details can be collected from the headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, from Wednesday, 14th August 2024.”

Since local government elections were last held in the state in 2014, opposition parties and civil society organizations have been calling for them, and expectations are now high.

This election marks the end of the governor’s three-monthly appointment of caretaker committee chairmen to manage the state’s twenty-one local government districts.
