Uganda Garbage Landslide Death Toll Rises to 25

The death toll from a garbage landslide in Kampala, Uganda, has risen to 25, with no further survivors expected to be found, according to state minister for disaster preparedness and relief, Lillian Aber.

The landslide, which occurred on Saturday in the northern district of Kiteezi, buried both people and livestock.

By late Monday, authorities had recovered 25 bodies and reported no survivors. The number of missing individuals remains unclear.

The prime minister’s office has provided shelter for three children whose parents are still unaccounted for.

Heavy rainfall has complicated rescue efforts as excavators continue to work through the debris.

President Yoweri Museveni has dispatched special forces to assist in the search operations.

A 200-meter buffer zone has been established around the site, and residents have been evacuated, Aber confirmed.

The Kiteezi landfill, which has been in operation since 1996 and processes nearly 1,500 tonnes of garbage daily from across Kampala, has been closed due to the incident.

Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago indicated that alternative dumping sites are being sought, as the closure of the landfill has led to garbage piling up on the streets, posing potential health hazards.

Recent heavy rains have affected the region, with a mudslide in southern Ethiopia last month resulting in approximately 250 deaths.
