TCN APPLAUDS OMELU VIGILANTE FOR PROTECTING CRITICAL BENIN–ONITSHA 330kV TRANSMISSION INFRASTRUCTURE
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has applauded the Omelu Community Vigilante for averting a potential disruption to bulk power supply through the swift arrest of a suspected vandal along the Benin–Onitsha 330kV Transmission Line.
The incident occurred at about 2:30am on Sunday, 2nd August, 2026, when vigilante members on routine patrol intercepted a 34-year-old man, Mr. Humphry Anala of Auchi, Edo State, allegedly attempting to compromise the structural integrity of a transmission tower by loosening its base bracing.
The suspect was immediately handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for investigation and prosecution. He remains in custody.
TCN disclosed that preliminary findings show the suspect was previously apprehended by the same community about two months ago for a similar offence and was released after pleading for leniency.
“Acts of vandalism on transmission infrastructure directly threaten grid stability and power supply to millions of Nigerians. We commend the Omelu Community Vigilante for safeguarding a critical national asset and for their partnership in securing our network,” TCN stated.
The Company also acknowledged the NSCDC for its collaboration in protecting transmission installations nationwide.
TCN condemned all acts of sabotage and urged host communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around transmission towers, substations, and other power facilities to the nearest security agency or TCN office.
