Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has outlined crucial lessons for Nigeria following the nation’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In a series of tweets on his official X account on Monday, Obi noted that while Nigeria failed to secure a medal, the global event underscored both the country’s challenges and areas of potential.
Obi stated, “Despite Nigeria’s disastrous outing at the 2024 Olympics, we should not overlook the valuable lessons from this global stage.
Although we finished without a medal while nine African nations triumphed, we still had notable achievements.”
He highlighted the successes of four Nigerians who excelled under different flags: Yemisi Ogunleye, who won gold for Germany; Annette Echikunwoke, who secured gold for the USA; Ebelechukwu Agbapuonwu, who won silver for Bahrain; and Rena Wakama, who was named the best coach for leading Nigeria’s female basketball team to the quarterfinals.
Obi added, “These achievements demonstrate that with the right environment and leadership, Nigerians can excel.
This serves as a powerful reminder that our political leadership needs reform to prevent further damage and to build a better Nigeria.”
In response to Nigeria’s performance, the Sports Ministry has pledged to immediately begin preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Spokesperson Kehinde Ajayi assured, “We are committed to turning the tides and restoring our sporting glory.
The journey in Paris has inspired us to start preparations now to ensure we showcase our potential and reaffirm our status as the giant of Africa.”
