Local police in Catalonia reported to AFP on Thursday that four people have been arrested in connection with a knife attack on the father of young Spanish football star Lamine Yamal.
According to a spokesman for the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police force, the attack happened on Wednesday at 1910 GMT in a car park in the Rocafonda neighborhood, which is home to Lamine Yamal, in the Catalan town of Mataro, about 30 kilometers from Barcelona. Mounir Nasraoui, Yamal’s father, is reportedly being treated at the Can Ruti hospital after suffering multiple stabbings. AFP was unable to get in touch with him for comment.
A source close to the family told AFP that Nasraoui is now “out of danger” and “remains under observation” but in a “stable” condition.
When questioned about the incidents and the victim’s potential hospital release date, the source declined to comment further.
A fourth individual was placed under arrest at 0900 GMT on Thursday morning, following the arrest of three on Wednesday night who were being questioned at the Mataro police station.
To learn more about the attack’s circumstances, investigators need to speak with witnesses and the victim “as soon as possible,” according to the police.
According to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the incident happened following a street fight with some men who had approached him while he was out for a walk with his dog and then came back to attack him.
At the age of 15, Yamal made his Barcelona debut in April 2023. The previous season, he shot to prominence and established himself as a vital member of the Catalan giants.
The 18-year-old Spanish winger made history at Euro 2024 by playing a crucial part in his team’s record-breaking fourth victory. He also became the youngest player to play and score in the competition’s history.
Yamal often makes the hand motion “304,” which is his neighborhood’s postcode, to celebrate goals. His father and grandmother still reside in Rocafonda.
During the European Championship, Nasraoui gained notoriety for his media appearances and social media presence. He regularly shared content on social media that expressed his support for his son.
