A group of police officers from the Concerned Police Inspectors in Nigeria on Thursday staged a protest at the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Asutan Street in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, due to unresolved salary arrears spanning 11 months.
The officers, representing various police units, expressed frustration over the lack of attention to their financial well-being by the authorities.
They disclosed that approximately 1,500 officers, promoted from Inspector II to Inspector I, have not received the appropriate salaries since their promotion was officially recognized on September 10, 2023.
In an appeal addressed to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, and also sent to the presidency, the national assembly, and the Police Service Commission, the officers highlighted their struggle with outdated salary payments, which has placed a severe strain on their ability to support their families amid rising living costs.
They reported an approximate shortfall of N550,000 each due to the unpaid arrears.
The officers criticized the IGP for focusing on dress code regulations while neglecting their financial needs.
They expressed discontent with the insufficient response from their pay officers, who attributed the issue to a lack of directives from the IGP.
The officers called for urgent action to rectify the situation and ensure they receive their due payments.
