Russia announced on Friday that it successfully thwarted a nighttime assault involving 12 US-made missiles targeting the iconic Crimea bridge, which was constructed on the orders of President Vladimir Putin following Moscow’s annexation of the peninsula.
The Russian defense ministry stated, “Air defenses were used last night to repel a coordinated strike by 12 ATACMS missiles made in the US on the Crimean bridge. All the missiles were destroyed.”
The bridge, inaugurated by Putin in 2018, links Kerch in Crimea with the Krasnodar region of southern Russia.
Kyiv has launched several attacks on the Kerch Bridge since Moscow’s military campaign began in February 2022.
Additionally, Russia’s defense ministry reported earlier on Friday that helicopters had intercepted and destroyed five naval drones approaching Crimea in the Black Sea.
In June, the Kremlin issued a warning to the United States about potential “consequences” and summoned the US ambassador after a Ukrainian missile strike on Crimea’s Sevastopol, which Moscow claimed resulted in four fatalities.
