Abia State has confirmed its first case of Monkeypox, according to an announcement from the state government.
Prince Okey Kanu, Commissioner for Information, revealed the development during a state executive council meeting on Monday.
Kanu reported that out of 13 suspected cases, one tested positive, nine were negative, and three remain unconfirmed. Fortunately, there have been no reported deaths related to the case.
The confirmed case is located in Isialangwa, and the state has established health centers, including at Abia State University Teaching Hospital, with plans to open additional facilities soon.
Dr. Ngozi Azodo, Special Adviser on Health, detailed the state’s response, highlighting collaboration between the Ministries of Health, Environment, and Public Utilities.
She mentioned the formation of a steering committee for infectious diseases and the state’s alignment with the Federal Government’s “One-Health” policy.
Dr. Azodo urged residents to practice good hygiene, minimize contact with animals, and avoid individuals with suspected Monkeypox.
She also announced plans for the Ministry of Health to renovate and upgrade 200 Primary Healthcare Centres within 100 days, starting in the first week of September.
The upgraded facilities are expected to be completed by December, described as a “Christmas gift” for Abians.
