Pharmacy Council Closes 400 Unlicensed Drug Stores in Cross River

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has shut down over 400 unlicensed drug stores in Cross River State and apprehended five illegal medicine dealers.

This move follows a comprehensive inspection of drug operations across the state to ensure regulatory compliance and protect public health.

Pharmacist Stephen Esumobi, Director of Enforcement for Cross River State, disclosed the action in a statement on Friday.

He emphasized that these enforcement efforts are vital for maintaining the quality and safety of medications and for safeguarding the integrity of the healthcare system.

The operation involved surveying approximately 500 premises, leading to the closure of 405 facilities, including 31 pharmacies, 174 patent medicine shops, and 200 illegal medicine stores.

Esumobi highlighted that inadequate storage conditions, such as exposure to high temperatures and humidity, contribute to the degradation of pharmaceutical products.

The PCN remains committed to ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe and effective pharmaceutical products, and it continues to address issues related to unregistered establishments and poor handling practices.
