A fire broke out early Friday morning at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road in the Ogba area of Lagos State.
The blaze reportedly started around 2:20 a.m. and affected a section of a two-winged, three-storey building comprising 16 two-bedroom flats. One of the two-bedroom apartments in Flat 5, Block 21, was severely damaged.
Preliminary findings by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) indicated that the fire began due to an electrical surge in the children’s room.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, confirmed that the children’s room was completely destroyed in the fire, resulting in the loss of properties worth millions of naira.
He stated, “The swift and coordinated response by the Agency’s LRT, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service helped to contain and extinguish the fire quickly.”
Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported. The victims and other residents were also advised on the safe use of electrical appliances.
As of 5 a.m., personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and the Nigeria Police were still working to fully bring the situation under control.
