UI Students Suspend Fees Hike Protests

The University of Ibadan Student Union (UISU) has decided to halt its ongoing protest against the recent increase in school fees.

This decision came after a meeting with the university’s management on Saturday.

During the meeting, an agreement was reached to extend the deadline for school fee payment, initially set for September 4th, by three weeks.

Additionally, the first semester exams, which were scheduled to begin on September 2nd, have also been postponed by three weeks.

In light of these developments, the UISU announced the suspension of the protest, acknowledging that the decision on the fee increase by the university’s governing council remains unchanged.

The union urged students to use the extended time to arrange their fee payments and prepare for the upcoming exams.

The protests, which began on July 16th and 17th, were in response to the fee hike, with students calling for a reversal.

Despite the protests, the university’s governing council upheld the fee increase, leading to a renewed protest that started on Thursday and continued for three days.

Earlier today, the university management issued a directive for students to vacate their hostels by 2 p.m.

In response, some students gathered at the Students’ Union building to discuss the next steps.
