Philomina Addo Yina of the Falconets earned the Player of the Match title after her impressive performance in the team’s victory over Korea on Monday morning.
The team, led by coach Chris Danjuma, secured a 1-0 win in their Group D match at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The winning goal came in the 84th minute, courtesy of Flourish Sabastine.
This victory marks Nigeria’s fourth consecutive win against Korea, having previously won 2-0 in 2012, 2-1 in 2014, and 1-0 in 2022. Yina stood out as Nigeria’s top performer in the closely fought contest.
Following the match, Yina took to social media to express her gratitude for the award.
Quoting Jude 1:24-25, she wrote: “All glory, and honor, and praise belongs to you Father, the KING of kings and LORD of lords! Nigerians, this is for you. My teammates, this is for you. My coach and the staff, this is for you. My family’s here, this is for every one of you. Unto the next.”
The Falconets are set to face former champions Germany in their upcoming game on Wednesday.
