WAFCON Final: Tinubu sends delegation to support Super Falcons
President Bola Tinubu has sent a delegation to Rabat, Morocco, to represent the Federal Government and support the Super Falcons ahead of their final match in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against host nation Morocco.
Tinubu, in a statement released by the State House on Saturday, praised Super Falcons’ performance throughout the tournament, describing it as “awe-inspiring” and reflective of the values of pride, honour, and strength.”
“Tonight, you stand at the cusp of history as you face the host nation, Morocco, in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat,” Tinubu stated.
The President also commended the Super Falcons players for their display of empathy off the field, referencing their visit to Gabriela Salgado, a South African player who was injured during the semi-final match.
He called the gesture a symbol of “shared humanity, empathy and sisterly affection,” applauding the team for embodying African values.
If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions. Unbeaten in the group stages, victorious in the knockout rounds, and conceding only a goal in the semi-finals. Apart from this, you have emerged triumphant in all your previous nine finals.
On behalf of a grateful nation, we are rooting for you and praying for your resounding success tonight, as you strive to achieve the crowning accomplishment of lifting a record tenth continental title.”
Tinubu announced the dispatch of a presidential delegation to Rabat to demonstrate the government’s full support.
The delegation comprises the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, among others.
Tinubu noted that he is looking forward to receiving the Super Falcons, tournament officials, and the trophy in Abuja.
The President also expressed gratitude to the Nigerian community in Morocco, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, team families, coaches, and embassy staff for their support throughout the tournament
You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home. Your fellow countrymen and women, young and old, are rooting for you. I look forward to receiving the team, the trophy, and the officials in Abuja,” he said.(THE GUARDIAN)
