Environmental Challenges: Balarabe Advocates Inter-Agency Collaborations

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has emphasized the need for inter-agency collaborations to tackle environmental challenges in Nigeria.

During a meeting with the Director-General of the National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Abubakar Sadiq, Lawal identified key areas for collaboration, including climate-resilient water supply and sanitation (WASH), energy-saving clean cooking, erosion and flood management, ecosystem restoration, and afforestation programs.

He noted that these collaborations would enhance access to safe drinking water, reduce water-borne diseases, and mitigate household energy poverty, deforestation, and emissions.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Ibrahim Haruna, the Minister’s call aligns with N-HYPPADEC’s mission to address environmental challenges in hydro-power producing areas.

N-HYPPADEC’s Director-General, Abubakar Sadiq lauded the Minister’s efforts in flood warnings and responses to erosion and pollution management, stating that the Commission’s interventions are notable in water supply, sanitation, housing, youth empowerment, and institutional strengthening. He described N-HYPPADEC as a strategic partner to the Ministry.

The collaboration aims to drive sustainable development, create jobs, and boost public awareness on environmental issues.
