    TCN Unveils Load & Outage Analytics Platform to Transform Grid Reliability

    The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has unveiled a new Load & Outage Analytics Platform designed to improve visibility, monitoring and management of the national transmission network. The technical presentation and live demonstration was held on Wednesday, 27 August 2026 at TCN’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

    The Managing Director/CEO of TCN, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Engr. Aminu Tahir, commended the Operations Department for developing the software in-house. He noted that while the full system is still being deployed, the platform has already improved visibility across the network.

    “Technical and commercial losses remain a major challenge for TCN. Better load management and improved grid stability will help reduce outages, enhance efficiency and lower the cost of prolonged interruptions,” he said.

    Delivering the main presentation, the General Manager, Operations, Engr. Godwin Aguiyi, said TCN’s current reliability reporting was slowed by fragmented data in spreadsheets, slow manual processes, and inconsistent KPI calculations. He explained that the new platform is a Streamlit-based application with 13 modules built entirely in-house by the Operations Department, barely one year after the creation of the Transmission Service Operator, TSO, department. The system provides region, station, transformer and feeder views for load analysis, automatically classifies outages and generates board-ready KPI reports in minutes instead of days.

    It also incorporates governance features such as role-based access, structured uploads and full audit trails to end shared logins and ensure accountability. In addition, the platform integrates the Fault Attribution Ratio, FAR, to clearly separate TCN and DisCo responsibility under the 30/70 Service Level Agreement.

    Using July 2026 data as a test case, Engr. Aguiyi disclosed that 3,714 outages were logged nationwide, resulting in 48,603 MWh of load lost. Lagos Region accounted for 20,693 MWh, with 572 emergency, 306 forced and 129 planned outages.

    He added that 22 feeders exceeded allowable outage hours, with losses valued at ₦720.33 million. For example, the OBOSI feeder in Onitsha lost _1,063.74 MWh_ at Band A rates. “This data reflects only the 33kV feeder-level outages for which TCN is accountable. It does not include the portion attributable to Distribution Companies,” he clarified.

    Engr. Aguiyi recommended nationwide deployment of the platform, IoT integration for real-time data capture, and upgrades to systems, display screens and internet connectivity at all stations.

    In her remarks, the Executive Director, Human Resources & Corporate Services, _Mrs. Abiodun Afolabi-Fadahunsi_, reaffirmed management’s commitment to equip engineers and system operators with tools to ensure grid stability. _”We are monitoring daily grid reports to resolve operational needs in real time and we will back our technical teams with the resources required to sustain stability,”_ she said.

    The unveiling marks a major step in TCN’s digital transformation. If fully deployed, the platform is expected to end decades of manual reporting, save billions in lost revenue, strengthen DisCo accountability, and position TCN as a data-driven transmission operator in Africa’s electricity market.
