Basketball: FC Barcelona Signs Nigerian Chimezie Metu

FC Barcelona has secured a one-season agreement with Chimezie Metu, the 2.08-meter-tall American player of Nigerian descent. The contract, which runs until June 30, 2025, marks Metu’s first foray into European basketball.

Metu, who concluded the 2023–2024 NBA season with the Detroit Pistons, averaged 10.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. As a free agent following his stint with the Pistons, he has now signed with Barça.

Before his recent NBA tenure, Metu made his professional debut with the San Antonio Spurs after being selected 49th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft. He subsequently played for the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, eventually joining the Pistons earlier this year.

Primarily positioned as a winger pivot, Metu is known for his impressive athleticism, strong mobility, and capability both inside and outside the paint. His addition to FC Barcelona is anticipated to enhance the team’s performance with his dynamic play style.

A Nigerian-born Los Angeles native, Metu represented the D’Tigers in the Tokyo Olympics. His move to Barcelona adds to the presence of Nigerian players at the club, alongside James Nnaji.

This signing highlights FC Barcelona’s commitment to strengthening their roster with talented international players.
