Stop killing protesters – NLC urge FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged both the Federal and State Governments to cease the violence against citizens participating in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.

This appeal was made following the deployment of security forces to protest sites, which the NLC said has worsened the situation.

Joe Ajaero, NLC President, criticized the police for introducing violence to the otherwise peaceful demonstrations, emphasizing that their actions have led to numerous casualties.

He highlighted the stark contrast in how protests were handled in different states, praising the Edo State Police Command for their effective crowd management while condemning the excessive force used in Kaduna.

The protests, sparked by rising fuel prices and the removal of subsidies, have seen widespread participation across states like Lagos, Oyo, and Abuja. However, the situation has been further complicated by reports of looting in Kano and other northern regions, prompting police intervention.

Ajaero called for immediate action against officers responsible for the violence, demanding disciplinary measures and compensation for the victims’ families.

He warned that if the police continue their aggressive tactics, the NLC might be compelled to take measures to protect citizens.

The organization emphasized the importance of humane crowd control and the need for security personnel to lead by example in maintaining peace.
