Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker and activist, stated that no politician has ever introduced electoral reforms resulting in their own political downfall, except for former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Speaking at an IPAC Roundtable in Abuja, Sani, who served as a senator for Kaduna Central, argued that Jonathan was unique in his willingness to make reforms that risked his position.
Sani criticized the integrity of Nigerian politicians and questioned why institutions like the judiciary, INEC, and political parties are not seen as the last hope for ordinary citizens.
He further highlighted Jonathan’s unusual decision to appoint an INEC Chairman he did not know and to implement a data capturing system that ultimately contributed to his own political challenges.
According to Sani, such self-sacrificing reforms are unprecedented among Nigerian leaders.
