The Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, has taken decisive action to address the rising cost of foodstuffs in the Agbalata International Market, Badagry, by dissolving all market committees responsible for setting prices.
This decision was announced at a meeting held at the monarch’s palace, where it was declared that sellers would no longer be restricted by these committees when pricing their goods.
The traditional ruler said that the practice of demanding extra payments from sellers after transactions must cease immediately.
This move is part of an effort to emulate the approach of Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Oni of Ife, in reducing the cost of goods in the market.
Additionally, the Akran revealed that selected chiefs from the palace would be visiting the markets to ensure the enforcement of this directive.
The Badagry Local Government Chairman, Mr. Olusegun Onilude, had previously approached the palace to seek intervention in curbing the escalating prices of foodstuffs.
The meeting was attended by various traditional chiefs and market leaders, who were instructed to ensure compliance with the new rules.
