New NBA President Osigwe Pledges to Hold Government Accountable

The newly inaugurated President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has pledged that the association, under his leadership, will hold both federal and state governments accountable for their duties to the citizens.

Osigwe made this commitment during his inaugural speech titled “Our Mandate” in Lagos on Thursday, after being sworn in as the 32nd president of the NBA. Outlining his agenda, Osigwe emphasized the unique role that legal practitioners play in society.

“As lawyers, we are in a unique position to drive positive change and uphold justice, equity, and fairness. It is our duty to ensure that the law serves every Nigerian, regardless of their background, status, or affiliation,” he said.

Osigwe stated that the NBA, under his leadership, will hold all levels of government accountable, especially the federal and state governments. He stressed that the association will push for government policies and programs that address the needs and aspirations of the people. This includes advocating for good governance, financial transparency, reducing the cost of governance, and prioritizing citizens’ welfare.

“We will ensure that the government effectively addresses challenges related to the security of lives and property, respect for fundamental rights and freedoms, the provision of employment, and basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, quality and affordable education, healthcare, infrastructure, and access to justice,” Osigwe said.

Osigwe, who previously served as the association’s general secretary, reiterated that the NBA will be vocal and proactive on matters affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice.

He assured members that the NBA will engage constructively with different levels of government and other stakeholders, presenting proposals and strategies to address emerging issues.

“As we embark on this leadership journey, we are mindful of the significant responsibilities ahead. However, we are optimistic. With your support and cooperation, we will face these challenges directly and turn them into opportunities for the growth and advancement of our members,” he concluded.
