Open Arts, the organizing body behind the Hausa International Book and Arts Festival (HIBAF), has announced December 19-21, 2024 as the date for the upcoming HIBAF24 and Abuja, Nigeria, as the location.
The fourth edition of the festival is themed “Popular Culture.” HIBAF24 will explore how the Hausa language, as a lingua franca in Northern Nigeria, brings people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds together.
This year’s HIBAF will delve into the rich tapestry of Hausa popular culture, encompassing everything from film and literature to games, fashion, and cuisine.
The festival will highlight how popular culture not only reflects the social needs and interests of the Hausa people but also absorbs influences from around the world through media, translation, and other forms of cultural exchange.
As a dynamic and evolving entity, Hausa popular culture is a blend of traditional elements and modern influences, both local and global. It transcends ethnic and linguistic boundaries, evolving into a living cultural expression that resonates with a wide audience.
HIBAF24 will address how the Hausa-speaking community engages with popular culture, its impact on daily life, and its role in connecting with the global community.
The festival will feature a mix of virtual and physical events, offering participants a platform to explore these themes in depth
