Plateau Student Gets Death Sentence for Stabbing Teacher to Death
A Jos High Court has sentenced Odey Emmanuel, a final-year student of Government Science Technical College in Bukuru, to death by hanging for stabbing his teacher, Job Dashe, to death.
The incident occurred on July 30, 2022, after Dashe disciplined Emmanuel for collecting double rations in the school kitchen.
Emmanuel reportedly threatened Dashe, saying, “I shall do it, nobody will stop me,” and “I must hurt this teacher.” Witnesses testified that Emmanuel accessed a knife and stabbed Dashe on the right side of his chest. Despite immediate medical attention, Dashe was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mercy Seat Hospital.
The prosecution, led by the Plateau State Attorney-General, presented evidence, including medical reports and eyewitness testimonies, which the defense failed to disprove.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Bakfur noted the premeditated nature of the attack, the public setting in which it occurred, and the clear intent expressed by the defendant prior to the act.
He emphasised that such acts of violence within educational institutions pose a grave threat to society and must be met with the full force of the law.
Odey Emmanuel was therefore found guilty of culpable homicide punishable with death and was sentenced to death by hanging
