Police Arrest Armed Robbers, Recover Phones, Tricycles in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a four-man gang notorious for snatching phones and tricycles along the Awka and Ifite axis, a hotspot where unsuspecting residents, particularly students, have often fallen victim.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad carried out the arrest during a patrol in the early hours of Monday.
Recovered items from the suspects include nine mobile phones — among them an iPhone traced to a victim — a laptop, two tricycles with registration numbers LSD 464 QP and BLF 552 VH, four additional tricycle plate numbers, and substances suspected to be hard drugs.
According to the statement, the suspects — identified as Nnaji Chidera (19), Chijioke Mmaduabuchi (21), Wisdom Ogbonna (19), and Afamefuna Egbe (20) — were intercepted during a night patrol along the Agu Awka/Ifite corridor. Upon interrogation, they confessed to being members of a syndicate that targets students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and disguises their vehicles with multiple tricycle plate numbers during operations.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for their swift response. He also cautioned youths against indulging in crime, warning that the command will ensure that offenders face the full weight of the law.
