The family of the late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria’s national flag, has announced that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has released funds for his burial.
Pa Akinkunmi, originally from Abeokuta in Ogun State but a resident of Ibadan, passed away on August 29, 2023.
Governor Makinde’s financial contribution comes after a series of delays.
Despite promises from both the federal and state governments to support the burial, the necessary funds had not been provided until now.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, had previously visited the family on behalf of the Federal Government, assuring them of support.
Additionally, the Oyo State Government had sent condolences.
Mr. Samuel Akinkunmi, the family spokesperson, expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for fulfilling his promise.
He mentioned that the burial would take place in the coming days, with the exact date to be announced soon.
The family also extended their thanks to the Yoruba World Congress UK and the media for their support and advocacy, which helped bring attention to the delays in fulfilling the burial promises.
