UNIBEN Bans Use of Hot Plates, Gas Cookers Amid Electricity Tariff Increase

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has imposed a ban on hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels as part of measures to manage rising energy costs.

The prohibition, announced in a circular by Registrar Ademola Bobola, includes a warning that students who violate the ban will face expulsion.

This decision follows a recent electricity crisis at the university, triggered by a substantial increase in the monthly electricity bill from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), which rose from 88 million naira to 250 million naira.

The high charges led to the disconnection of both university campuses and prompted a student protest on July 3 due to prolonged power outages and reliance on generators.

In response to the unrest, the university Senate temporarily closed the institution to prevent further disruptions.

The circular also outlines that students must adhere to new guidelines for electricity use on campus and settle any outstanding fees to gain access to exams.

Bobola emphasized that payment of school fees and adherence to university regulations are crucial for examination eligibility.

Students are also expected to maintain good conduct and refrain from participating in unauthorized gatherings or demonstrations on campus.
